Now Playing Tracks

When I was a kid, you know I immigrated to the States in 1978, and I’m six years old and watching TV and I didn’t see any Asians on television. And you turn on Star Trek and there’s this Asian guy not chopping anybody up. He’s honorable, a helmsman of a spaceship, and it was a big, big deal for me to see that and have a role model.

The only Asians I remember seeing on mainstream TV when I was a kid were Sulu on Star Trek, nameless Asians loading trucks in the background or dying on MASH (which was all about funny lovable white US Americans waging war on Asians), and the “ancient Chinese secret” Calgon laundry detergent commercial.

Was the same when I was a kid. That moment of seeing George Takei not being overly-stereotyped when I was a kid was a powerful one. I think the only place I had really seen other Asians on the screen was finding the rare (because I was a kid in mountains, far from the rest of the community) movie that had Asians in it. Unfortunately, a lot of those were the “white guy learns martial arts, beats up Asians because ‘Merika” type movies. Which, of course was not TV. They were still the “Asian other” just as in MASH backdrops. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that Sulu always has a special place in my heart. Star Trek helped me get through some bad emotional spaces as a kid, and I think part of what made it welcoming was having POC, especially George Takei ( since I’m JA too, and the other Asian American actors who came later), represented on screen in positive and whole characters, with names instead of “Solider #1, Henchman #4, Ninja #18”.

THANK YOU! XOXOXOX

It was around this time last year that we received the disturbing call from someone who had found 5 tiny kittens inside two plastic bags, in a dumpster. (http://bit.ly/18aIPPj)

Imagine our surprise and heartbreak when we received a very similar call last weekend, the day before Mother’s Day. Someone noticed that a plastic bag in a grocery cart outside of a big-box store kept undulating, long after the wind stopped blowing it around. Upon investigation, they found six tiny kittens fighting for their lives inside the bag. Sadly, it was too late for one of the babies. But these five darlings made it into our loving care just in time for us to start them on the long path to recovery.

The night of the kittens’ rescue, little Elsie’s health plummeted. Her body temperature and blood sugar hit alarming lows. She was rushed to the ER where, over the course of 24 hours, she was stabilized. Now, she eats like a champ and has plenty of energy.

Gus, Karen, and Bianca are doing well overall, but the prognosis for Bianca & Karen’s affected eyes is unknown at this time.

Sweet little Lars has quite an uphill battle ahead. Though his general health is stable and his appetite is voracious, his badly infected eyes are clearly in need of intensive care. He is on the strongest, yet safest, medication we can provide for him, and our veterinarians are watching his progress closely.

Please consider helping us cover the costs of their medical care, as these babies work to recover from the trauma they have suffered.

Can’t afford to give? Please SHARE their story. We want to put an end to cruelty and neglect like they have endured.

oh babies. D: It appears they’ve reached their goal but extra money probably helps!

Honestly I still get very upset whenever I watch the Crow or think about Brandon Lee and Bruce Lee. I do believe they were both murdered and there is some conspiracy behind their death. They both died in some mysterious way, plucked before their time.  it pisses me off that when they died it seemed like nobody did anything about it or not enough. I cared and I wasn’t even alive to do anything about it when this happened!  RIP to these two beautiful, amazing, inspiring people. Father and son<3

It’s also important to recognize that every family is different. Sister and brother — parent and child — who is to say what the most important relationship within a family is?

Senator Patrick Leahy has suggested today might be the last day of the Senate Judiciary Committee markup process. If there were ever a time to call a Senator and tell them to stand up for reunification for all kinds of families, it’s now.

I don’t usually bother y’all with this kind of thing, but this is a golden opportunity to move Senators like Schumer (D-NY) and Feinstein (D-CA) who have been waffling on some of these issues in the right direction.
